Local Cyclists Complete Grueling Trans-Continental Race

Annapolis, MD (June 22, 2013) Cyclists Jay Yost of Mahomet and Martin Gruebele of Champaign competed as a 2-man team in the 2013 edition of Race Across America (RAAM). They left Oceanside, CA on June 15 along with 34 other teams of 2 to 8 riders from 9 different countries. 39 solo riders began the journey several days earlier. The route took them across hot deserts, over high mountain passes, into strong storms on the Kansas plain, through Greenville and Effingham in Illinois, over numerous climbs in the Appalachians, and finally to the finish in Annapolis. They completed the 2,962-mile journey in 7 days, 4 hours, and 4 minutes, which was good for 3rd place of 7 teams in the male 2-person under 50 category. They were 4th among all eleven 2-person teams.
