Ironman Wisconsin 2016

posted on Sep 15 2016 by Martin Gruebele

Martin’s report. The short: I did this on the vapors of bike fitness from RAAM, without any significant run training. The result was better than my 2014 IM WI! Nonetheless, my advice is not to run a marathon without run training. I felt SORE after that run!

Iron Season 11/11: Done!

posted on Dec 09 2014 by Martin Gruebele

The short from Martin: Done with my 10 full Ironman-brand triathlons in 12 months, plus Beach to Battleship. Nick Paulson also raced Cozumel on November 30th. I finished Cozumel 6/150 in my age group. Heat and dehydration got to Nick, but he finished in the top 35% of his age group.

Iron Season 9/11: Say “Cheese”!

Reported by Martin. The short: The UIUC professor trio of Bruce, Andy and I again headed to race, this time in Madison, Wisconsin. Temps and humidity got to 79 F and 40%, quite a bit higher than predicted. All went by the book in 11:47 for me.

Iron Season 8/11: Hot, hot, hot!

Reported by Martin. The short: Nick Paulson and I headed off to two different Iron races: MiTi in Michigan, and IM Louisville. And we were not the only ones from town, with Illinois student Tim Lichtenstein and Professor Bruce Hajek also heading to Louisville. It was a hot+humid sufferfest!

Iron Season 6/11: Holy Hills!

posted on Jul 04 2014 by Martin Gruebele

The short: Martin drove out to Idaho with Ron Hoyne to race IM Coeur d’Alène. All went as planned, with a hot and hilly 3:48 IM marathon. The swim was 63.5 F (brrr!) and most of the bike course was a string of 4-6%, 1-2 mile climbs. It was tough for everyone, and Martin finished 14/252 = top 5.5% in his age group, the best finish yet.

Iron Season 5/10: IM marathon PR, but not at a ‘hot’ race

posted on Jun 10 2014 by Martin Gruebele

The short: 10:48 total, 3:45 new Ironman marathon PR, 11th in 50-54 age group: Best rank yet, clawing my way to the top 10 where rolldown qualification for Kona becomes plausible…  Still no ‘hot’ sub-4 IM-marathon: a tropical storm came through, it rained all day, and the temperature dropped to 70 F.
