Ironman Wisconsin 2016

posted on Sep 15 2016 by Martin Gruebele

Martin’s report. The short: I did this on the vapors of bike fitness from RAAM, without any significant run training. The result was better than my 2014 IM WI! Nonetheless, my advice is not to run a marathon without run training. I felt SORE after that run!

Short version: Suzanne kicks ass. Scott is really good at race logistics, like loading bikes onto cars and finding the best post-race junk food.

Meg and Rikki staying loose before the race

The racing season is winding down, save for CX and a few long-distance triathlons, and the crispness of fall is in the air. It must be time for Tri the Illini, a race noted for its proximity and accessibility to beginner and elite triathletes alike.

Suzanne and Scott at Versluis Lake Swim Course

Suzanne and Scott headed to suburban Grand Rapids for the Michigan Titanium full aquabike race. Aquabike = triathlon - run = swim, bike, done! Full means 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike: Ironman without the pesky marathon at the end.

Stoneman and Route 66

Martin’s short version: Sean did a half iron in Springfield and I did a sprint (my excuse: my right foot still hurts). Sean set a new PR at 5:08, and I came in 1st in age group, 8/157 overall. A funny thing happened on the way to the forum, though…

The short reported by Martin: Sean and I headed out to Petersburg near Springfield. I did the Stovepipe Sprint Tri, he did the Railbreaker Olympic Tri. Sean got 2nd in age group, I came in for the overall bronze trophy. Good day at the office.

The short - reported by Martin: Ron Hoyne and I drove to Sullivan IL for the Sullivan Civic Center Tri. Things went well, with Martin and Ron 1st + 2nd in AG, and 9th+24th/140 overall. The top-3 medals feature adorable Pandas (see photo).

Tri the Illini 2014

posted on Sep 23 2014 by Scott Dahman

On September 21, several Wild Card teammates, friends, and family competed in Tri the Illini sprint triathlon on the University campus. This is a fun event that is uniquely accessible to first-time or casual triathletes with a cycling background. It starts with a short 300 meter swim in a pool that never gets deeper than 4'-6". The "I'm afraid I will drown" excuse doesn't hold water. Next is a 14.5 mile ride over familiar south campus roads that summits the imposing Yankee Ridge in both directions.

Steelhead 70.3

The Ironman Steelhead 70.3 is a WTC half ironman race held in Benton Harbor, MI.  The 2014 version was my second attempt at this race (the 2011 version with a cancelled swim being my first) and my wife's first half iron distance race.  I finished in 5:04:16, 34/228 in my AG, and 194/2087 overall.

The short: I swam above my pay grade and spent the next 2 hours deep in the pain cave on the bike and run.
