Matthiessen Mountain Madness (mtb race)
May 4 2014
Matthiessen is a fantastic mountain bike course and probably my favorite in Illinois (although with all the work being done out at Kickapoo this is about to change). The course winds its way down into a river valley and back up again with tight sweeping corners, thought-provoking rocky stream crossings, and one long-ass climb. It is one of few courses in the race series that allows me flex my decent downhill and technical skills This week the river was running high, fast, and clear which is a welcome sight to those of us from east-central Illinois.
I woke up in the morning not feeling very racey and the quality of my race reflected my disposition. I took all the right lines, climbed the few smaller hills with minimal effort, and practiced looking through the corners. The final climb out of the river valley is a major commitment and by the 4th visit it was a daunting task. Fortunately I had a great cheering squad to help me finish the last 20 feet with confidence. In terms of what matters, I just didn’t move very fast. I finished 3/3. Emily (1) and Bev (2) were working hard from the beginning, so there was no doubt about who earned it.
I don’t have the energy for races under 2 hours right now. The endurance people will understand what I mean. I’ve been in freight train mode all spring and 3 grueling gravel metrics before May probably isn’t the best way to be fast. But what can I say, I heart gravel.
