Betenia’s Threshold Clinic – Part II
(Reported by Martin) Tuesday June 25th marked the second Seymour TT. 6 riders showed, with Jeff Decker again leading the pack at well over 26 mph, and Alexx Head Alejo coming in above 20 mph on her road bike!
Six racers gathered in the 82 °F heat at 6 PM. At least the 5 mph SSE wind was favorable for a little push on the way back. We started Alexx – Ron Hoyne – Mike Balajewicz – John Betenia – Martin – Jeff in one minute intervals, with Rob Hornbaker officiating. Jeff started last, yet managed to pass all but Mike, setting a new 2017 course record of 26.74 miles per hour. Everyone who rode again decreased their time, except I – and I blame that on not riding ‘superbike’ for this one (my heart rate and pre-race training regimen was the same as last week).
Betenia’s prescription of threshold work paid off for me at least – I ran 4 miles at a 6:18 pace at 143 bpm after the TT, much better than a few weeks ago. Maybe it’ll help me stay closer to the front of the Wednesday night ride? Next week: 40k TT in Tolono?
